Why Choose Grazing?
Grazing with animals is not always the cheapest option, but it can be the best for your situation. It's not just us saying it; that's also the NY Department of Environmental Conservation. The other common options are heavy machinery and chemical defoliation (like Round Up). Depending on your situation, you may decide to go with one of these options. Make an informed decision. Here are some of the pros and cons of each.
Grazing
Cons: It can be pricey at about $500-$1000 per acre. It takes time, and possibly a couple seasons of grazing to eliminate some species. There is often follow-up with hand-clearing and chainsaw work, depending on your goal.
Pros: The sheep and goats are fun to have around! This is the way nature intended land management to work. Small ruminants are light of the soil, churning it for better nutrient and water absorption, instead of compacting it. Animals fertilize as they graze. They can rid your property of plants you'd rather not touch, like wild parsnip and poison ivy. It's the chemical-free, healthy option for the earth.

Heavy Machinery
Cons: This option is also pricey, and finding an operator willing to take on a small job can be challenging. It devastates the land, leaving difficult to work, compacted soil. It uses fossil fuels and pollutes the air.
Pros: It is very quick, often taking only one day.

Chemical defoliants
Cons: We still don't fully understand the impact of these chemicals on the environment. It may be more harmful to use them near waterways or on steep inclines with run-off. They often require multiple applications at just the right time and they don't work well on overgrown areas.
Pros: Chemicals are the cheapest option and are DIY.
